Praying for Your Sorority

Peace Love and Pear Jelly Beans

As most of you know, I am beyond proud to be 2 things in life:

1.) a Disciple of Jesus Christ and
2.) a sorority woman.

I’ve written before about the collision between being a Disciple of Christ and being part of the Fraternity and Sorority Life System.  But I always wondered what it looked like to wholeheartedly pray for my sorority.  Now as an alumna looking back, I’m realizing I fell short of this as a collegiate.

You see, my sorority (as well as many others) was founded on Christianity.  We recite Scripture, pray before meetings and meals, and have biblically based values.  Everything my sorority is conceptually all goes back to my own foundation – Christ.

1.) Take a look at your sorority values.  If you sorority was also founded on Christianity, you might begin to see the connections.  If your organization wasn’t, I’m sure you can find Scripture to back up your values and ideals (use a concordance for help).

2.) Take a long look at your values and Scripture. How can you use these in your prayer for your organization?

Let’s look at my sorority’s values and Scripture to back them up.  Look at Philippians 4:8:
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

One of our values is excellence. Excellence, according to Dictionary.com, is “the fact or state of excelling; superiority…”  Now look at what Paul says, again.  Think about things that have virtue and bring praise to the Lord – things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report.  Are these “things” Paul speaks of showing excellence?  I would say they are.

In the Greek Life System, we continually say we have the issues, drama, and problems because we fall away from our values and our rituals.  Likewise, the world has its load of issues, drama, and problems because we fall away from the values of Christ.

3.) When you approach prayer for your sorority (or fraternity), meditate on these Scriptures.  Make the connections between the values of your organization, values of God, and the Bible.  Then, I believe you will feel the Holy Spirit working in your prayer life for your sorority.

As an advisor for a sorority, I still struggle to see my prayer life and sorority life coincide.  I still struggle to genuinely pray for God’s Kingdom in the Greek Life System, but I’m realizing more and more the values align with God’s Word and that all hope isn’t lost.  I’m sure others are with me in wanting to see God’s Kingdom work in and through the Greek Life System.  That change, though, begins with wholehearted prayer for your sorority.
